The Comoros-flagged ship "Raptor" had departed from El Dekheila port in Egypt and was sailing to Istanbul when it reported a mechanical failure and issued a distress call early on Sunday, the Greek coast guard said. Eight of the crew were Egyptians and the rest were Syrian and Indian nationals. The coast guard had rescued one person, who was airlifted by helicopter in gale force winds. A few years ago, my wife, Sarah, and I went on a sailing trip on the eastern Aegean. Thirty or forty miles to the south of our boat was Miletus, the birthplace of some of the first recorded theorists of the physical world. Across a nearby peninsula, just 70 miles away, was Lesbos, the island of Sappho and Alcaeus, the greatest early lyric poets. To the south in Samos was the birthplace of Pythagoras, an early theorist of an everlasting soul. It struck me that not so far out of view from the cockpit of our small boat was the whole province in which Greek philosophy had begun.

Un jurnalist grec a obţinut câştig de cauză la Curtea Europeană pentru Drepturile Omului (CEDO), după ce fusese condamnat pentru "insultă" la şase luni de închisoare în Grecia, pentru că îl calificase într-un articol drept "neonazist" pe directorul unei şcoli. CEDO a condamnat joi Grecia pentru încălcarea libertăţii de expresie (articolul 10 al Convenţiei), estimând că această condamnare penală a jurnalistului constituie o ingerinţă în exercitarea de către acesta a dreptului său la libertatea de expresie şi că această ingerinţă "nu este necesară într-o societate democratică". Jurnalistul fusese condamnat în 2013 de către curtea penală a insulei Lesbos în primă instanţă, ca urmare a plângerii depuse de directorul şcolii care a fost calificat drept "neonazist" şi "teoretician" al Zorilor Aurii, partidul neonazist şi xenofob care la acea dată era în plină ascensiune în Grecia. Toate recursurile înaintate de jurnalist fuseseră respinse de instanţele juridice din Grecia. Directorul publicase pe site-ul său de pe internet numeroase mesaje ce elogiau rasa ariană şi naţional-socialismul, precum şi un mesaj în care el îi îndemna pe greci să voteze pentru Zorii Aurii, subliniază CEDO.
